Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney addressed a sold-out luncheon meeting of the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce April 15, 2016 at the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale, Frankford and Grant aves.

The luncheon, sponsored by Cardone Industries, one of the world’s leading suppliers of automotive replacement parts located in Northeast Philadelphia, was sold out.

Mr. Kenney discarded prepared talking points and spoke without notes for about 30 minutes on his ambitious blueprint to help fund pre-kindergarten education, rehabilitate city parks, recreation centers and police districts, reduce the city wage tax, retrofit school buildings, and reduce the city’s pension gap.

There is a wide array of business support initiatives in the budget, including help for neighborhood shopping corridors, many of which are in Northeast Philadelphia.

He defended his controversial proposal to implement a three cents-per-ounce tax on sugary drinks sold in the city as a way to generate $400 million over five years to fund some of his agenda.

The luncheon was held in the newly renovated Union League Golf Club, formerly known as Torresdale Frankford Country Club.  The historic facility and golf course has been given a magnificent new look by the owners, who were careful to creatively combine the facility’s storied past with its exciting future.

GNPCC Chair of the Board Jennifer MacMullen of Beneficial Bank was ecstatic over the luncheon.

GNPCC President Pam Henshall agreed.

“This beautiful venue instantly elevates any event held here,” she said.  “And a luncheon with the Mayor of Philadelphia is a very, very important event, and we are thrilled with the results.”
