Leveling the Playing Field: Strategies for Success
Dr. Monica McGrath, Resources for Leadership, Inc.
Monica McGrath is the former vice dean of Wharton’s Aresty Institute of Executive Education, adjunct professor at University of Pennsylvania and a member of the Penn Forum of Faculty Women. In her role as Vice Dean she led a team of over 100 professional staff and faculty to design and deliver thousands of leadership programs for global executives at every level of organizational responsibility.
Monica served as lead academic and learning director in numerous MBA and executive programs including “Women in Leadership”, “Executive Coaching”, “High Potential Leadership” and “Career Comeback: A Fellowship Program for Professional Women”. Monica also served as academic director of Women’s World Banking’s “Microfinance Leadership Program” and the initial Goldman Sachs Foundation “10,000 Women” and “10,000 Small Business” programs. She served as an expert in executive development for Wharton’s MBA Feedback and Coaching Network, the Wharton Leadership Program and the Wharton Leadership Fellows Program.
In addition to her work at Wharton Monica owns and operates Resources for Leadership, Inc., a leadership development consulting practice established in 1994. She has designed learning programs and served as an executive coach for senior executives and high-potential managers for companies such as Ortho McNeil Pharmaceuticals, Royal Dutch Shell, Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G), Siemens Medical Systems, Colgate Palmolive Co., FMC Corporation, TDL Group (Tim Horton’s), Unisys, Rohm and Haas, DuPont Company, IROKO and Wyeth (currently Pfizer, Inc.).
Monica holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Psychology from Rowan University (cum laude), a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree from Temple University, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Organizational Psychological from Temple University. Her area of specialization is adult learning and organizational psychology. She is also a graduate of the Harvard University Kennedy School’s executive program: The Art and Practice of Leadership Development.
Steven Singer, Steven Singer Jewelers
Is there anyone out there who has not seen or heard the iconic “I Hate Steven Singer!” ad campaign?
Never content with being an average guy, he also completed courses in diamond residency, color stones, gem identification and cultured pearls at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Even then, Steven was your classic overachiever. Things really kicked into gear on October 7, 1980 when Steven opened the doors to the first Steven Singer Jewelers in the heart of Philadelphia’s Jewelers Row.
At just 22 years old, Steven earned the distinction of being the youngest first-generation jeweler on Jeweler’s Row—the oldest (and second largest) jewelry district in the country. And, with his store measuring a scant 8′ by 18′, he also had the distinction of owning the smallest store on the street.
Fast forward to 1986. Steven decided it was time to start the Philadelphia Jewelers Row Association to create a code of ethics for jewelers and to market the district to customers throughout the region. Other jewelers took a shine to it, and it grew quickly. That same year, Philadelphia Mayor Wilson Goode declared September 14-20 as Jewelers Row Week, unveiling new Jewelers Row street signs. Evidently he took on City Hall…and won. Steven’s still active on the Philadelphia Jeweler’s Row Association (PJRA) and currently sits on the Board of Directors.
Steven quickly outgrew his 8′ by 18′ space. Then outgrew it again. And again. And again. By 1996, his reputation as a leading diamond and fine jewelry destination was winning over customers and the jewelry industry alike. The store’s success was evident—with some of the highest sales per square foot in the nation. Steven was asked to join an elite group of jewelers who form the world’s largest industry consulting group. He was the only area jeweler invited to join, giving him privileged information to better serve his customers.
In September of 1999, Steven purchased his current store—a three-story, 6500 square foot, block-long building on the other corner of 8th and Walnut. The new store also afforded him the ability to create a full service custom jewelry shop with a master jeweler, diamond setter, wax maker, designer and polisher. Ever the showman, Steven even designed the space so customers could watch their jewelry being made through a glass wall.
You can’t listen to drive time radio in Philadelphia without hearing some reason to hate Steven Singer. He’s all over the airwaves. Steven started advertising on Howard Stern during his two decades on terrestrial radio, becoming well-known to Stern listeners. Now on satellite radio, Steven’s commercials are heard around the world. Steven is a regular on the 94WIP Morning Show with Angelo Cataldi. He’s also one the sponsors of WIP’s annual Wing Bowl event, nationally recognized as one of the largest eating competitions in America. Steven Singer Jewelers also hosts the World’s Largest Bubble Bath, where Angelo and his crew broadcast from Steven’s bubble-filled jewelry store.

Christin Cardone McClave, Cardone Industries
Prior to joining Cardone full-time, Christin received her Co-Active coaching certification from the Coaches Training Institute (CTI) and holds her accreditation with the International Coach Federation (ICF). Prior to joining Cardone full-time, she coached individuals and family teams in business together to strengthen relationships and businesses through sustainable leadership practices.
Christin’s foundational leadership experience came from her background at Johnson & Johnson, a Fortune 50 company, spanning IT, Process Reengineering, Digital Marketing, eCommerce and internet start-up work, as well as Market Research for Consumer Products and Pharmaceutical M&A Teams. Christin was mentored through the J&J IT Leadership initiative, as well as various Women’s Leadership training opportunities.
Christin sits on the board of World Vision USA, one of the largest non-profit organizations, a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the root causes of poverty and injustice. She serves on the “Strong Women, Strong World” advisory council for WV and is passionate about educating women & girls. She also serves as a mentor for the PRAXIS Labs social entrepreneurship accelerator program.
Christin and her husband, Dan, have three boys. Dan and Christin are “Spousepreneurs”—a couple with multiple businesses between the two of them, and always dreaming up new ventures. They currently own a healthy vending machine franchise together. They support Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation, Salvation Army Philadelphia, and a variety of other local Philadelphia-based organizations through the Cardone Family Foundation, where she also serves on the board.
Marilyn Russell is co-host of the 98.1 WOGL Breakfast Club, weekdays from 5:30 am-9 am. She began working on ‘OGL January 9. She joins co-hosts Frank Lewis and Bill Zimpfer. WOGL can be heard on air, on line at www.wogl.com and via the Radio.com app.

“I feel as though someone is going to pinch me and I’ll wake up from a dream. To be asked to join 98.1 WOGL, a station with such great heritage here in Philly is completely mind-blowing,” said Marilyn. “I feel extremely blessed and lucky to do the best radio possible with a great crew!”
Marilyn, a Northeast Philadelphia native, started in radio in 1993 at Philly’s modern rock, 103.9 WDRE. Alternative music was just beginning to take hold and she hosted the new music show and local music show. She was also the station’s music director.
In 1998 she hosted mornings with co- hosts Preston Elliot and Steve Morrison at Y100. Marilyn then joined Greater Media in 2003 where she worked at both WMGK and the Ben FM morning show. In 2004 she began writing “Woman of the Week,” a blog celebrating extraordinary achievements by local and national women which later became a radio show on Ben FM. The show has helped various non-profits publicize events, programs and fund-raisers of all kinds.
